Emergency Management
for Higher Education Grant

The Community and Social Issues Institute was awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Education to develop, review, improve and fully integrate campus-based, all-hazards emergency management planning for Missouri State University and the surrounding community. This all-hazards planning will utilize the framework of the four phases of emergency management as put forth by the Federal Emergency Management Administration: prevention-mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.

While the University enjoys strong community partnerships, it recognizes the need to strengthen and better coordinate our joint planning efforts and our ability to recover and operate in the face of various types of natural catastrophic events such as tornadoes, earthquakes, and the recent disastrous winter ice storms. Man-made threats may also present potential hazards to the University community. Educating students, faculty and staff in procedures to follow in the face of threats from violent acts such as bio-terrorism, or active shooter(s) on campus is an integral part of this grant project.

The ultimate result of this grant initiative will be a highly prepared campus community with the ability to share its expertise with other universities and colleges.
