Promoting Positive
Change in Language Teaching: Innovations Research for Teachers

A Plenary Presentation

Dr. Kathleen M. Bailey

As teachers we work in many diverse contexts, but we all try to help our students develop their skills in the language they are learning. We do so by using a combination of “tried and true” activities, but also by experimenting and changing our practice. Yet all teachers work within systems that can constrain or promote their efforts to bring about positive change in their classrooms.

In this plenary we will explore some information about innovation – what innovation is, how it differs from problem solving, what processes are involved in promoting and innovation, and who the key players are in any attempt to bring about positive and lasting change. By understanding these issues, we will be in stronger positions to change our own professional situations and the lives of our learners for the better.
