Evidence Informed Play Therapy for Treating Traumatized Children

The current evidence base for treating traumatized children will be the scaffolding upon which dozens of creative, fun and practical play therapy interventions will be built. Interventions that target stress inoculation, anger and anxiety management, enhancement of positive coping, structure trauma narratives and counter cognitive distortions will be shared. Didactic teaching will be augmented with case examples, video clips and experiential learning. Come prepared to play.

 
Learning Objectives
  1. Describe the difference between post-traumatic play and health promoting play.
  2. List ten play therapy interventions aimed at stress inoculation and anger management.
  3. Describe five play therapy interventions aimed at enhancing positive coping.
  4. Articulate several play therapy modalities that can enhance the creation of a trauma narrative.
  5. Detail five play therapy interventions that assist clients with countering cognitive distortions.
   
 
Play Therapy for Attachment Problems: Science, Art and Innovation

This workshop will combine cutting-edge research in neuroscience and attachment literature with innovative techniques for strengthening the parent child bond. Treatment goals will be broken down into sequential steps with several fun, nurturing techniques illustrated for each step.

 
Learning Objectives
  1. Articulate functional and dysfunctional patterns of attachment.
  2. Describe how the attachment relationship impacts brain development.
  3. Translate aspects of the client's neurological development into practical treatment goals.
  4. List ten directive play therapy interventions that that will assist clients in re-patterning their attachment scripts.
   
 
 

Paris Goodyear-Brown MAPT presenter.

Paris Goodyear-Brown, LCSW, RPT-S, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor with specialized training in work with children, adolescents and their families. She received her undergraduate degree from Duke University and received her MSSW from the University of Tennessee. She pioneered the first play therapy program for the Therapeutic Preschool at Dede Wallace Center before joining Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Child and Adolescent Pyschiatric Outpatient Clinic where she worked in both the outpatient setting and the school based program. She currently sees children of all ages in private practice and serves as adjunct faculty for graduate programs at the University of Tennessee, Vanderbilt University, and Trevecca Nazarene University. Paris has an international reputation as a dynamic
and original speaker. She provides supervision, organization consultation and training on many topics related to child treatment. She is the author of Gabby the Gecko, a new bibliotherapy material aimed at helping children disclose and heal from traumatizing experiences. She has also authored a book entitled "Digging for Buried Treasure: 52 Prop-Based Play Therapy Interventions for Treating the Problems of Childhood and co-authored an original DVD, 10 Peas in a Pod, a resource that helps clinicians immediately replicate empirically informed prescriptive play therapy strategies.
